Stories that touch (The concluding part)

Our relief lasted for only some fleeting seconds as Adamu's disappearance loomed ominously,we were now burdened with the realization that the first 48hours in a missing person's case is very crucial. We knew we had to move at falcon's speed in order to bring Adamu home.
Scores of concerned neighbours and sympathizer had besieged our compound, leading the pack was Mrs Adubi, we were beyond shocked at the speed of light with which that news had travelled considering the fact that Mrs Adubi had relocated to the Island two weeks prior to Adamu's disappearance .

Initially when she (and her theatrics) arrived we were genuinely touched given that she and Adamu were quite cordial when she lived in our compound but as her wailings got louder we began to get concerned more like disturbed by her mourning which was more than the bereaved. Racing against time we instantly inaugurated an ad-hoc committee "Bring back our Adamu" dedicated to finding Adamu and it was no surprise that as a renowned resident forensic expert in our compound I was unanimously elected to head this committee.

We divided ourselves into teams and just as we were about setting out to collate the time lag, DNA samples, clues and so on, Adamu's" brother"keshua who also doubled as Head HR/Head security affairs (recruitment and redeployment) in our estate, informed us he has been briefed on Adamu's whereabout and that he is safe and sound. He attempted a sincere narration on why his brother went AWOL: Adamu had family emergency and all.
Overwhelmed with such huge relief that Adamu was safe, we didn't bother sniffing the odoriferous rat(colloquially known as sakamanje) in the story keshua was serving us.
Days later we got a new gateman and life went back to the way it had existed.

However, it will be many months later before we caught the sighting of Adamu when he visited his brother. His appearance raised more than a few eyebrows, he had lost a significant amount of weight, it was like he had shrunk, he was clearly undernourished.
Although we were angered at the manner which he terminated his employment, we couldn't help but feel pangs of pity for this once robust individual. We tried enquring what was wrong, with a grimace on his face he vaguely told us about his ill health whilst taking care of his mum.
This young man had lost his spunk, he was a sad shadow of himself nonetheless we sincerely wished him well in his endeavors and promised to put him in our prayers.

It wasn't until this fateful day when Adamu was frantically rushed into the estate in a limp state did we realise how severe the whole situation was. He was emaciated, hallucinating, slipping in and out of consciousness.
This time keshua was more than generous with the narrative that led up to his brother's present state. He recounted how Adamu was poached by Mrs Adubi with the promise of a better remuneration package once she changed address.
He also added that immediately Adamu took up employment with Mrs Adubi he knew something was amiss yet he couldn't place his fingers on it until he was called to come take his brother off her hands in this vegetative state. Mrs Adubi on the other hand stated that shortly after she employed Adamu, he changed his dietary preference to codeine and tramadol which led to his mental breakdown but Keshua strongly insisted his marabout had told him otherwise.
Meanwhile the street was awashed with the rumor that Adamu's destiny may have been...well...compromised, a rumour further fuelled when we heard that The Adubis recently took delivery of a new Mercedes Benz automobile.
Many folks wondered  could this be a curious case of one destiny"o"meter makes one benz"o"meter? This and many more questions we may never know answers to till we cross the narrow bridge.
Aside from being heavily laden with the responsibility of using our imagination to piece together the what really happened, we couldn't help but be genuinely concerned for Adamu a once vibrant young man withering away.

We all contributed the much we could spare for Adamu's Medical expenses(we were told Mrs Adubi cut him loose without any severance benefit )and after the emergency medical aid, he was repatriated to Sokoto for better "spiritual medicare" .While some folks maintained he was airlifted in an air ambulance others simply said he was an "attachment"in a Young Shall Bus. Most importantly and to the best of our knowledge he is said to be receiving the needed care from capable hands Up North.

EPILOGUE
Although Adamu allowed his tall ambition overshadow his small sucess and many argued that Mrs Adubi may not necessarily be the devil but all were united in the belief that she was definitely a catalyst to Adamu's misfortune.
In conclusion, evil may unlikely receive an invitation from us in its true form so it clothes itself in the right amount of sincerity to make itself look appealing, maybe... Just maybe that's why a crab watches with its head with its eyes.
