The Trials of Iyale ọokàn

Image
When some folks  in our estate decided to channel their inner aluta spirit rebelling against Nepotism, tyranny and oppression by IKEDC  I was so sure this won't end well. Nepa on the other hand kuku returned the favor and removed the "fuse" from the transformer plunging the whole estate into darkness. Now for some inexplicable reasons, folks thought I must have studied Conflict resolution and Management at the University, as I have become the "Go-to" mediator /negotiator between Nepa officers and the estate residents . But little did they know that as an ogbologbo (seasoned) Doomsday Prepper I was boyscout -ready. I knew in my heart of heart that I didn't want to spend the whole summer stalking and begging Mr Clement from the Nepa office,so kiakia I packed my bags... Maputo yaa! (ain't nobody got time for that kind of sturv😉 ). I sincerely wished the Mandela wannabes" aluta continua" knowing fully well by that by the time l returned in ...

AFOJUDI (EFFRONTERY)

Image
"Odo  ti  a baa  foju di  ni  gbe  ni  lo"..Simply put, Afojudi  is  when  you  are  in a canoe  in the  middle  of  the  sea  and  you  are singing  mami  water power ...powerless  power. As  a Yoruba girl  of  Ekiti  descent or  is  it extraction..... I thought  I had tamed  and  conquered  the  venom  and  sting  of  Chilli;  name  it  Atarado, Ataijose,Ata gigun, Ata  shombo  and  even  Cameroun  pepper. The romance  between  Ekiti  people  and  pepper  have  dated  back  time  immemorial...my  ancestors were  called  the  Atarodo  bender, The Ata-ijose  slayer, they were  the  original /undisputed  pepperdem  gang.   For me,  my ...

Keeping up with the Kalakuta Museum

Image
This year started with the resolution to step out of my comfort zone by making deliberate strides on leaving my comfort rut and meet life with some passion and fervour. Most of the time, I'm always blissfully unaware of  places outside my  comfort zone as clearly manifested when I worked opposite the kalakuta Museum and I didn't bother crossing the road to find out what existed behind the fence. But this year I was determined to be more spontaneous. So I thought hmmm🤔... why not start with the kalakuta museum. My taste in music is quite eclectic .From Hugh Masekela to Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran to Orlando owoh, Kendrick  Lamar to Natalie Cole and so on. And as wide ranging as these genres are, somehow Fela's music didn't quite make the cut. I have a few of his songs that I totally love ."water no get enemy"from the  Expensive shit album will remain a favourite .So moving forward it's safe to say I'm not a huge fan. Nonetheless I was /am extremely i...

Black panther (My Wakanda waka)

Image
The buzz that heralded the latest Marvel's installment Black Panther was on another level that even folks living under the rocks had synopsis of the movie. And in staying  true to the Yoruba proverb that states that when you hear "carry it " carry it" you had better join in the carrying or else someone will dump it in your backyard. Bearing this in mind I decided not carry last ...well...hypothetically. My romance with Marvel Cinematic Universe  Films started in 2008 with its release of Iron man and have since then watched every single marvel installments. So it is safe to say I'm a marvel aficionado. As a Marvel fan, each movie release was greeted with the same enthusiasm and when I saw Ellen Degeneres's interview /trailer with  Chadwick Boseman and I saw a black man with "the chest" (ripped abs and well chiseled muscles) I knew immediately this was going to be a dope movie. So as soon as the movie hit the Nigerian cinema I was set to see it...

Phantom's Pandora box part 2(Road to recovery)

Image
The  very very long road to recovery  Beads of sweats formed on my forehead and in matter of seconds l was drenched in sweats. At this point my legs gave way, l lunged towards the sofa for support. My Moremi gone just like that !?My pictures and videos flashed before my eyes ...more like played out like a slideshow and when I remembered I hadn't gotten around to backing up my pictures ,l involuntarily let out a guttural sound and I fainted all over again. Eventually when I came around I grabbed my other phone and made a call to my hubby. Me : (in a hysterical voice) Moremi  ni o!Moremi ti laa'na !!( Moremi has exploded)!. I couldn't comprehend how he remained calm under this circumstance but he was very calm and casual about it when he asked me to take it to a Techno Carlcare centre since the phone was still under warranty. It was getting to evening time on Saturday so I had to wait till Monday. It was the longest ...

Phantom's Pandora Box

Image
Sometimes when my head gets hot, really hot that I fear it might explode,I just hide inside the closet (abi wardrobe) and pretend to have my chronicles of Narnia moments. It is  never as easy keeping up with my "plenty kids", especially  the one who wants to have a birthday party everyday of the week ,or  the one who is hell bent on writing a thesis on why Cinderella's stepmom was wicked.what about the ones obsessed with doing a remix of the song " man is not hot"?the stifling screeches of  the "skrrahh- pap- pap ka-ka-ka skidiki pap skrrah"will torment the living day out of you. When such moments reach their apex I will jejely enter self preservation mode and hide inside the cupboard. A mathematical equation illustration of my kids will be( 1child  = 10children's energies ;mental and physical). My phones are not spared either .The ordeals my phones have gone through in the hands of my kids in course  of their growing years can only be better...

Maputo memoirs (part 2)

Image
Since every country in Africa always insist that they have the friendliest people in the Continent, I'm just going to go with that flow. But in all honesty ,Mozambicans are very warm people.Though not as animated as my naija folks but their hospitality, interests and smiles the people extended to me as a visitor (abi tourist) made it a remarkable experience in the country. Maputo train station Though Portuguese is widely spoken, most Mozambicans I came in contact with were able to communicate in English ,often times in smattering English and in all  my interactions with the people ,the intriguing and curious case of Mr kerebou clearly stood out. Mr kerebou, who owns a grocery shop around the corner, always  (strongly) insist that he doesn't understand English, but at  few times when he gets carried away, his English vocabulary, diction and that American accent are usually (almost suspiciously) impeccable that I often ponder ...abi homeboy is on some witness protectio...
